ALIG was formed over a decade ago by a group of expatriate women who met regularly for a coffee to share their experiences living in the Philippines. They wanted to make the most of their time in Alabang and connect to their hosts both socially and through volunteering and fundraising. ALIG’s popularity continued to grow and now has a membership of over 200 women. These members come from all around the world, many with connections to global organizations, to socialise and volunteer together in education and development projects as well as raise funds for our local charities.
In 2012, to better service the local community, the ALIG board made the decision to incorporate. They determined that ALIG could accomplish more on behalf of its’ charities by becoming an official organization. Consequently, at the board’s instigation, the membership voted to incorporate and obtain its BIR accreditation. This enables ALIG to accept donations for charities from a wider group of donors. All directors and coordinators continue to volunteer their services.
ALIG members connect with each other in many ways, exchanging ideas and opinions and embracing all our different cultures. Valuable and lasting friendships are formed that last long after expats have moved on. Life in the Philippines is very different to many other countries and ALIG plays an important role in welcoming and helping newly arrived expats settle into the community. At our monthly meetings we explore different perspectives of our host country and cover topics ranging from holiday destinations to keeping healthy. Our social events take in exploratory trips, shopping excursions, dinners, parties and informal get togethers. ALIG’s activities’ groups encourage us to share our talents with other members and these range from painting, photography, music and languages, to technology, sports, cooking and dance.
To make sure we keep connected and informed, our secure Yahoo Group lists everything from what’s-on to links to other organizations and even members’ for-sale-and-wanted postings. To help our newcomers settle in easily, our monthly newcomers’ coffee mornings link those who have just arrived with others who have “been there, done that”.
Most importantly, our fund raising and volunteer opportunities help us give back to the community that welcomes us by supporting some of the area’s most needy children and families through a variety of different programs.
